The shankh, Shankham, is a conch shell, a sacred emblem of Vishnu Bhagavan, and is a giver of fame, longevity, prosperity, good luck, and cleanser of sins. It is one of the enduring symbols of Hindu civilization from time immemorial, and is the abode of the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi.
The shank is very closely associated with Vishnu and Lakshmi and being a symbol of water and female fertility. It is regularly used even today in Pooja rooms, rituals, aarti, and was used as a war trumpet, in ancient times.
